YOU NEED TO BE 16 YEARS OLD TO TAKE THE ONLINE ASSESSMENT.
The value and advantage of a diagnosis of a specific learning difficulty:
Once a diagnosis is made of a specific learning difficulty schools can apply for learner support at school in the form of academic accommodations or concessions such as extra time, a reader, a scribe or a planning assistant. Learner support improves a learner’s ability to provide an accurate account of his or her knowledge, competencies and skills during tests and examinations.
Eduhelp also offers SACE-accredited training to suitable persons such as retired teachers to become readers, scribes, invigilators, personal and/or planning assistants to support learners during tests and examinations.
Training is available on request. Information about upcoming training dates will be provided once a request for training is received via email.
What is Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia?
Dyscalculia
The term ‘dyscalculia’ derives of Greek origin: dys’ – problems with and ‘calculia’: to count.
Numerical skills are present in both hemispheres of the brain.
Neuropsychological evidence indicates that the parietal lobes are actively involved when mathematical and arithmetical operations are executed, in the intra-parietal sulcus (SIP), where quantity and size of objects are calculated, also estimation and organization of information
associated with it.
Dysgraphia
Dysgraphia is a specific learning disability that affects how easily children acquire written language and how well they use written language to express their thoughts.
Dysgraphia is of Greek origin, and the base word graph refers both to the hand’s function in writing as well as to the letters formed by the hand. The prefix ‘dys-’ indicates that there is impairment in producing letter forms by hand.
The suffix ‘-ia’ refers to a dysfunction. Thus, dysgraphia refers to a specific learning difficulty with impairment in writing.
Impaired written expression can interfere with learning to spell words correctly in writing and how well thoughts are expressed in written format.
Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a lifelong, neurodevelopmental condition that affects reading, writing, and spelling.
It involves difficulty recognising words, connecting sounds to letters, and reading fluently. It is not a disease and has no cure, and standard teaching methods usually don’t resolve it.
Dyslexia is mostly genetic and impacts how quickly information is processed and understood.
It can also occur alongside attention difficulties such as ADD or ADHD. With the right support, progress is possible, but improvements take time and require specialised intervention.
ADHD
Attention is essential for learning, as it filters the information the brain processes. When attention is weak, both everyday and academic learning are affected, and it becomes harder for someone to show what they actually know.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is a common condition involving difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and sometimes hyperactivity. Adults who struggle mainly with inattention, but show little or no hyperactivity, are classified as having the predominantly inattentive subtype.
In this form of AD/HD, executive functions such as working memory, planning, self-regulation, motivation, and emotional control may be affected. As a result, adults can have trouble staying focused, recalling information, managing emotions, and organising or prioritising tasks.
